DANCING FOR DRAMA SCHOOL AUDITIONS
Your movement skills are important to consider when auditioning for Drama School, and there are certain steps which you can take to work on this area of your skill base. Almost all drama courses will assess your ability to move and/or dance as a part of the audition process, but it is not something to get overly stressed about, even if you are a beginner in this area. What the panel will be looking for is a willingness to learn, as well as a natural aptitude to grasp the work.
Preparing for this area is important, and it is advisable for each candidate to have had experience of dance classes. For a pure acting course, it is good to have pursued a variety of movement options, such as Ballet, Jazz, Salsa, Rock n Roll, Contemporary and Ballroom classes. Remember that you do not need to show expertise in any dance or movement area, but a comfortable approach, confidence and willingness to attack the work. For a musical theatre course, your dance skills are more important and it would be advisable to have attended classes including Ballet and Jazz. Two classes a week would not be completely inappropriate!
In the actual audition, you must wear appropriate dance clothing for a dance class. If you don't know what,
(if any), dance will be required for the audition, get in touch and ask. Black is generally a good colour to choose. For a movement workshop you will usually need to wear loose fitting clothing and bare feet. Having an open and trusting manner and working well in a team are important attributes to develop.
