Doug joined Hurtwood in 2005. He trained at The Central School of Speech & Drama after completing a degree in Drama, Theatre & Philosophy at The University of Surrey. Doug is an experienced examiner and team leader for Edexcel examinations. In addition to his work at Hurtwood he teaches ‘Text in Performance’ at the Guildford School of Acting.
Recent directing credits include Berkoff’s The Trial, Metamorphosis, Spring Awakening, Macbeth and the popular musical RENT. Previous work includes, ‘Aladdin’ at The Sunderland Empire starring ‘Starsky’ star Paul Michael Glaser and 70’s Soul Diva, Sheila Ferguson, ‘Little Women’ for the Walton Playhouse, and ‘Annie’ for the Thorndike Theatre. Doug began his directing career in New York and for six years worked as an Associate Director for the prestigious Stagedoor Manor Performing Arts Training Centre. In 2004 Doug featured as the acting tutor in the US Sundance Festival Documentary ‘Stagedoor’. He was then asked in 2006 to direct the college premier of RENT in co-production with Music Theatre International. Other production credits for Stagedoor Manor include A Little Night Music, The Secret Garden, Blood Brothers, Little Shop of Horrors!, Grease, The Wiz!, Tommy, and the New York premier of Honk!
In the UK, Doug has directed productions of The Wizard of Oz (Richmond Theatre & Theatre Royal Windsor), Oliver! (The Edinburgh Playhouse), The Sound of Music (Wilde Theatre, South Hill Park) R&H’s Cinderella (Hampton Hill Playhouse), Annie (Epsom Playhouse), Stephen Sondheim’s Into the Woods (Arthur Cottrell Theatre, Kingston-Upon-Thames), Me & My Girl and The Boyfriend (Putney Arts Theatre). Doug was also involved in the record breaking ‘One Night of Shakespeare’ and directed various productions in association with the BBC and Shakespeare Festival (Corn Exchange, Newbury).
In addition to his theatre work, Doug is also a visiting lecturer at The Central School of Speech and Drama and specialises as a guest tutor on the Postgraduate & Masters Education programme. Doug is currently writing a new musical and as a performer, Doug is the lead singer for the ‘Speakeasy Band’.
Doug is the Housemaster at The Lodge where he lives with his wife, Ellie, their two children, Beth and Sam and Dusty the dog.
