James Tunstill (Music Technology Staff / Flute Tutor)

James joined the Hurtwood team as a visiting member of the department in 1995. He now teaches Music Technology full time and is responsible for the Sequencing, Composing, Arranging and Music Theory elements of the Music Technology Specification; he also coordinates the peripatetic side of the department and is Head of PSHEE, Enigma and Lifeskills. Since 2006, James has been on the Edexcel examining team for AS Music Technology.
Having gained his first professional qualification whilst still at school, James then studied for 4 years at the Royal College of Music as a flautist under Christopher Hyde-Smith and David Butt; he also studied Piano under Neil Imellmann and Conducting under Neil Thompson as well as Stylistics, Analysis and Composition. During his time at the RCM, James performed regularly as principal flautist and also piccolo with the College’s Symphony Orchestra, Wind Orchestra and Concert Band in venues including The Royal Albert Hall and The Britten Theatre and on feature films including “Shine”,
as well as being heavily involved in a number of chamber ensembles and a regular member of the RCM Chorus.
James started his musical career as a singer and still continues this in his spare time. This has led him to undertake several concert tours and recordings for radio, television and film in the UK, Sweden and the Czech Republic as well as in countless cathedrals up and down the country and in Europe. In 2009 James was invited to perform as a soloist at the National Operatic and Dramatic Association's annual showcase. He is also still active as a freelance performer and Musical Director. Credits include Les Misérables, The Wizard of Oz, The Producers, Oh, What A Lovely War, Robin Hood, Babes in the Wood, Snow White & The Seven Dwarfs, Happy as a Sandbag, Noyes Fludde, Sweeney Todd, Beauty and The Beast, A Christmas Carol, Dick Whittington, Annie, Half a Sixpence, The King and I, Oliver, My Fair Lady, and West Side Story.
James also now runs his own music group - "Anthology" - which gives its members a free education in musicianship, vocal and performance skills through individual and group tuition as well as workshops with professional vocal coaches from GSA and BIMM amongst others. On top of this he regularly plays the organ for churches in Surrey and Sussex.
He is available for weddings, funerals and other family events...
